In our last blog post, we looked at some of the mistakes to avoid when forming your own business, such as underestimating the commitment and not planning adequately. Today, we will continue to discuss some common mistakes that you will want to avoid in your business formation plan.
Spending Too Much Money
Starting a business costs money. Some business areas will require more start-up costs than others. While you do want to spend enough money to demonstrate that you are serious about your endeavor, spending too much, too fast is not advisable. Rather, try to buy things as you go, rewarding yourself for your business successes. This method will ensure that you do not end up breaking the bank before your business gets off the ground.
Undercharging
Just as you cannot spend too much money, you also cannot shortchange yourself. You might be tempted to charge less to build up a customer base, but you need to charge enough to be taken seriously as well. When setting prices, look at factors like the market value, available alternatives, convenience and the perceived benefit and risk of your customers. You need to cover your costs and have money left over for a profit. Do not sell yourself short.
Ignoring Legal Issues
Not taking legal considerations seriously can be one of the most devastating mistakes you can make in your new business. You will want to structure your business in a way that protects your assets. Also, there are important legal implications involved in making many new business decisions, such as seeking financing or risk management. Seeking the advice and counsel of a professional is highly recommended.
When forming your new business, be sure to avoid these common mistakes. Take the time to plan and understand the commitment your new business will require. Spend money wisely and do not sell yourself short with your product or service pricing. Finally, consult a professional to ensure that you have all of your legal bases covered.
